This day was like any other, Kyle awoke after what felt like an eternity. “That’s strange,” he thought, “I set my alarm today, and it didn’t go off.”

He turned to find that his alarm was in fact going off, but he wasn’t able to hear it. For some reason, he could tell it was making noise, but he couldn’t actually hear it. It was as if some strange narration was telling him about the sound.

He quickly dismissed the idea as absurd and made his way to the bathroom. But as he fiddled with the sink, he couldn’t hear the water hitting the sink. He knew it was making noise, but again, he couldn’t hear it.

He had to be sure. He darted for the toilet and flushed, waiting for the sound he knew too well. Nothing. He exclaimed in fear as he wondered if he would ever hear anything again. He reached into the cupboard and tried to see if the problem was lodged in his ear canal.

He drove the cu-tip as deep into his ear as he could. He removed it and did the same with the other. Alas! He still was without hearing. Defeated, he returned to his bed.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw it. A small cable he had never seen before. He made his way to the cable, knelt down, and examined it. It led under the storage room door. Unsure what was on the other side, he turned the knob and pushed open the door.

He found the problem in the form of a button. A button marked “sound”. Carefully, he reached down and pushed the button. Suddenly, sound rushed back into his ears, he could hear his alarm clock, birds chirping, trumpets blaring, and toilets flushing. It was glorious! He arose from the storage room a changed man. And he and the alarms ringing, birds chirping, and toilets flushing lived happily ever after.

I just finished Gears of War 3 with Jarrod.

It really was one of the greatest games I have ever played… I’m so sad to see one of my favorite series ending… but I’m happy with the story and the ending.

Also… there’s always multiplayer.

The Alot is an imaginary creature that I made up to help me deal with my compulsive need to correct other people’s grammar. It kind of looks like a cross between a bear, a yak and a pug, and it has provided hours of entertainment for me in a situation where I’d normally be left feeling angry and disillusioned with the world.

For example, when I read the sentence “I care about this alot,” this is what I imagine

Similarly, when someone says “alot of _______,” I picture an Alot made out of whatever they are talking about.

If someone says something like “I feel lonely alot” or “I’m angry alot,” I’m going to imagine them standing there with an emo haircut, sharing their feelings with an Alot.

The Alot is incredibly versatile.
